“Stuff the Bus”
Each year the Middletown Cares Coalition in collaboration with Mid City Transit work together to collect school supplies. Many local businesses as well as community organizations, churches and local residents purchase supplies and drop them off to one of the many locations that are accepting donations. At the end of the drive, usually in late August, the supplies are collected and then divided. In recent years we have managed to create approximately 400 back packs filled with school supplies to be given out to families in need in Middletown NY. On the day of distribution the Middletown Mayors Youth Council along with Middletown Cares volunteers meet to form an assembly line to “stuff” the backpacks. We then load all the backpacks onto a school bus and take a trip to deliver the bags to each of the 8 schools in Middletown.
The teachers and other staff at the school then distribute the bags to the families they choose based on need.
MedReturn Drug Collection Program
In May of 2016, in collaboration with the Middletown Police Department and the City of Middletown, the Middletown Cares Coalition installed a permanent drug disposal box. Citizens looking to dispose of excess and expired prescription and over-the-counter medications can now visit the safe and secure permanent drop off location at the Middletown Police Department located at 2 James Street, Middletown, New York.
Properly disposing of excess drugs is everyone’s responsibility as a matter of public safety. More than 70 percent of young people abusing prescription pain relievers get them through friends or family, a statistic that includes raiding the family medicine cabinet. Now Middletown, New York residents can dispose of unwanted medications properly and safely all year round, not just on a designated drug take back day. The collection site is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Drugs can be dropped off with no questions asked.
The drug collection unit is produced by MedReturn, LLC of Grafton, WI. MedReturn, LLC is committed to providing a safe, secure and environmentally friendly way to help law enforcement agencies and communities collect unwanted or expired household medication, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs and unused pharmaceuticals.
Family Movies in the Park
The Middletown Cares Coalition along with the Middletown Recreation and Parks Department have teamed up to offer a series of kid –friendly movies in the Middletown Fancher-Davidge Park. If families are spending time together, kids are less likely to engage in reckless dangerous behaviors including using drug and alcohol. Once a month from June through October, our huge blow up screen is prepared and families are invited to the park to watch a movie under the stars.
Kick Off to Summer BBQ
The Middletown Cares Coalition hosted a Town Hall Meeting on the dangers of Underage drinking. The Orange County District Attorneys Office was in attendance and spoke to the families on the new Social Host Law that was just passed in Orange County. Many local agencies were there and each group provided an educational component as well as an activity on alcohol and its effects on the young brain. The event was followed with dinner and dessert. There was free family swim offered to all the families in attendance after then event.
